“My husband and I vacationed in Playa Hermosa at a beautiful private villa we rented from the owner, Chris Spirer on VRBO. We were recommended Amy with Avispas for just about anything we needed or wanted. They were awesome. We used them for transportation and excursions. Chele and Chepe we fabulous and showed us coutryside I am sure not many others saw. Our excursions were personalized for just my husband and I. We enjoyed the beach tour where Chele showed us some of the most gorgeous beaches I’ve seen. We were also introduced to true Costa Rican foods at the local Sodas. Chele made sure we were not financially taken advantage of at several of the stops, even negotiating for us and telling us if something was over priced. Amy was fabulous. She stayed in touch with us throughout our entire vacation and made sure whatever we came up with was done. It truly made a great vacation even better and allowed us the confidence to get out and explore Costa Rica.”
“Made in Costa Rica – The Most Fun Ever”
“My family and I were in Costa Rica over the Christmas holidays and went on this tour with Amy from Avispa’s Adventures. Amy took us to an area close to Lake Arenal called Tiluron. We stopped on the way at a small local restaurant for an authentique Tico lunch and got some Chicheronas to snack on the way. This tour is all about how average families in Costa Rica live. Amy took us to a home where the family made and sold homemade cheese. It was explained to us how the cheese was made and it was so good that my Mom bought some to take home. We got to meet the whole family and gave them a bag of apples and grapes which is a traditional Costa Rican Christmas gift. The next place we went to was to a lady’s home who raises all kinds of butterflies. We got to go into the netted area with the butterflies and also got to see the different stages of butterfly growth. After we left there we went to Alverro’s house, he grows and sells coffee and macadamia nuts. Alverro showed us the machines that he made to shell the macadamia nuts and to roast the coffee beans. We also got to watch his family making homemade tamales. My Mom took home tamales, coffee, and Alverro gave me a bag of macadamia nuts. I really liked this tour because it really showed my family how people is Costa Rica live in their daily lives and all the people we met were very happy to show us what they did even though it was the Christmas season. This is a really good tour to go on if you want to learn more about the Costa Rican people in this area. Amy this was super good tour I learned a lot. Thanks for taking us on this tour.”
“Outstanding excellent fabulous wonderful”
“My husband and I along with my sister and her husband visited In September. This was our second trip to Costa Rica and had the pleasure to meet with Amy and Avispa tours the first time! Amy, Chepe, Eduardo were our only choice the second trip out there. She advised us about a Villa that was absolutely gorgeous and private. It was a 3 bedroom, full kitchen, living room, 2 bath, patio and small pool! The best! Great rate too!
She personalized everything from a river trip where we saw so much wild life, monkey’s, crocodiles, and so much more! It was simply amazing. We also zip lined, went horse back riding, shopped but in the “real Costa Rica”. She let us do things on our time and never rushed us through anything. She topped our trip off to an outstanding day trip to Nicaragua and we spent all day there! Amazing with the people that worked with her to get us across the border to showing us how the people live! Volcanos, river trips, food! The guides were fabulous and showed us so much that we needed 2 or 3 days there!
To say that this was excellent is an understatement! Amy and her team made us feel like family and never made us feel like it was a tour. It felt comfortable safe and treated us like royalty! Never a moment of discomfort or. Dissatisfaction! Amy is very busy and will always return your calls! She focuses first on the people she has with her but always get back to you! The lines of communication are sometimes rough in CR but she will call you!
I will not use anyone except Amy and Avispa when we return in a couple of months! We already pre-planned some of the things we want to do when we return! You will not be disappointed with her and her team! They are amazing and made this a trip a “trip of a life time” that I still talk about and recommend.
Thank you to Amy for making this the best vacation ever!”
“Amy is Awesome”
“We were greeted by Avispas Adventures when we landed in Liberia. We were driven to the grocery store to get provisions for our week’s stay because we had a kitchen at our place at the Four Seasons. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us wonderful information about the country and its people. He spoke English, (we didn’t speak Spanish) and was very cordial. All the while Amy checked in on us to make sure we were being taken care of. During the week, we did several excursions trips with them and they were all wonderful. They provided snacks in their van which seated many people and was very comfortable. Their web site is wonderful and they had many tours we could have taken given more time. We were staying at the Four Seasons and their excursions were more expensive so we felt we did well with Aviapas. I would recommend Avispas. They will do just about anything your heart desires and with a smile, and they are always checking up to see if things are going OK.”
“There needs to be a higher rating then “excellent”…..”
“WOW. I would leave it at that but I feel like I should elaborate.
This company is the real real real deal. From start to finish it was over the top quality and service in everything that they do. I promise you will not be disappointed with any aspect of the services that Avispas provides. I don’t even know where to start…I will try to summarize.
We were there for a week in December and it was our first time in Costa Rica. I did my usual internet scouting and research and found Avispas and was floored by the overwhelming positive reviews, not just on Trip Advisor but other forms as well. They were all true, every word of positive feedback.
We stayed at an all-inclusive resort that wasn’t exactly the Ritz. My reasoning here was that I wanted to spend the extra money I saved on REALLY seeing and experiencing Costa Rica, not sitting by the pool of the JW Marriott (boring- just go to Florida). I contacted Amy who is the owner of Avispas, gave her the lowdown on the things we wanted to see, experience and our personalities and she came back with a customized itinerary for us. She is awesome. The kind of person you feel like you’ve known for years, like an old college friend is giving you a tour of Costa Rica, telling you all the cool local spots and looking out for you to make sure you have a blast and are safe. Professional to a tee but also very low key- whatever you want she will make it happen. No haggling, no BS just quality service. For everything that you are getting as part of the tours the prices and VERY reasonable. We were able to see and do all of the things we wanted to as well as some unexpected, great stops along the way with our amazing driver Chepe (I don’t even like calling him a driver, he was much much more then that!). A local, chill, very smart guy who made us feel welcome the minute we met him. I knew that if Chepe was there, I was not getting ripped off and I was safe to relax, have some beers and not stress about a thing. He made sure to show us everything he could and his knowledge of this home town and area is awesome. He even surprised us with stops to some of his favorite local spots. The trips were amazing but Chepe made them 10 times better.
We were originally set to do 4 full days of trips when somewhere around mid-week we realized we were having way too much fun and asked to book a last minute trip to Nicaragua. Of course, Amy pulled it together in a flash and it was another fun, interesting and eventful day. The tours as you probably know by now are private- you and your travel partner(s), a nice big comfy van, a cooler with beers, waters and snacks and maybe another couple. We had 3 days where we were on our own and 2 where we were partnered up with another couple who wanted to do the same adventures as us. As expected, they were super cool too and we all had a blast together.
Ok now the good stuff, trips we did:
1) Palo Verde Adventure- totally relaxing and educational day. You cruise around in a boat and get to see some AMAZING wildlife. The boat driver that we had on our trip has a giant crocodile trained to come on command up to the boat so you can look, take pictures, be terrified, etc…I’m not kidding. Relaxing and a must do to really get a sense of the immense natural beauty of Costa Rica.
2) Eco Adventure- DO THIS! Don’t ask questions, just book it, now! It was BY FAR one of the coolest experiences we have had travelling. I wish I was there right now…. Everything about this day was like dying and going to heaven. Fun, adventure, culture, great food and ending with swimming in the hot springs pool and a mud bath put it over the top. We did a hybrid on this day and also added in the Rincon de la Vieja Hiking Adventure in the morning as well as they are nearby.
3) White Water Rafting Class III/IV Adventure- another fun day what we combined with some other activities. Not typical huge white water rafting like in North American but a total rush.
4) All Day Beach Adventure- so relaxing. Restaurant was perfect, right on the beach (literally) and the beach was just about deserted. We did an ATV tour which was super fun and a great way to see all of the different beaches, the towns and how locals live. We asked our guide to stop right at sunset and we just sat at a little beach bar and had a beers in the sand. Paradise.
5) Nicaraguan Adventure- as I mentioned this one was a late add on our agenda. It was wonderful to be able to experience another country while on the trip. Again, service in Nicaraguan was world class, food, sites, everything. You get to literally stick out head over the edge and look into an active volcano. The boarder crossing was a little stressful- just make sure you do some research before you go so you know what to expect. Amy can help answer any and all questions.
To say I highly recommend Avispa would be an understatement. I have been around the block a few times and used various tour agencies all over Europe. Forget everything you know about “guided tours”- this is so much more than that.
We’ll be back and thank you for helping to make it a trip we’ll never forget!
